The Courses of the Summer and Winter University

The University of Freiburg has a century-long tradition of bringing people together in order to learn a new language and build new international contacts over the semester break. With the Summer and Winter University you can further develop your German, English or French language skills through intensive language training as well as practical language exercise courses and seminars. In addition, free-time activities both in and around Freiburg will give you valuable insights into German culture and lifestyle.

The Black Forest metropolis, as Freiburg is also called, lies at a tripoint - in close proximity to France and Switzerland - and is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Due to its modern infrastructure and its innovative environmental and energy policy Freiburg has been crowned the "Green City". The diverse cultural life of the city and the university's long-standing tradition of international orientation will ensure that the guests have a great and inspiring time.

Language Courses in the Morning

The language course takes place from Monday to Friday in the mornings. Each morning there are 4 teaching units (45 minutes each).

English Language

Language Levels: B1, B2, C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR)

This course is specifically designed for students wanting to take up an English-language degree course at a German university. By means of authentic and up to date materials and a variety of interesting topics and texts you can brush up and intensify your knowledge of the English language. Task-based grammar and oral skills training under the guidance of our highly qualified teachers, who are all native speakers will guarantee a language training of the highest standards. Special study techniques such as reading strategies or presentation skills will also be practised. German language skills are not required.
You must have successfully completed the English language level A2 to be able to participate.

  

Exercise Courses and Seminars

Depending on your language level, you are welcome to attend any exercise courses or seminars offered in the afternoons. The seminars examine different current issues in the areas of cultural and social sciences, e.g. history, literature,  film, environment, European policy, interculturality, etc. You will find the detailed programme in the course booklet upon arrival.

The seminars and exercise courses take place in the second and third course weeks, a total of 10 days with 2x45 minutes of class per day. Participation in max. 2 exercise courses or seminars is possible.

A graded certificate will be issued to all participants at the end of the course.
It will include your individual language level following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as well as your ECTS credits European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)

In our digitalised language laboratory (Sprachlabor), students can use self-study materials for individual practice of listening comprehension, grammar and pronunciation by choosing from a wide range of audio material and online exercises.

Free-Time Activities

Explore Freibung and the surrounding region with your new friends. Our student tutors organise city tours, pub crawls, game and cooking nights, museum visits, as well as daytrips and hiking tours in the region.

Excursions

There will be a number of Saturday or Sunday excursions, for instance to Heidelberg, Lake Constance, to France or the Black Forest. We organize a full-day programme: a round trip, entry tickets and guided tours are included in the excursion fee.

You will find a detailed programme, dates and prices in the course booklet upon arrival.

 

 

Accommodation

Single rooms at student dormitories and shared private flats in Freiburg may be arranged upon request in March, August and September. The rooms are simple student single rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom.
 

Important Information
  • Flats and dormitories are located in different buildings and city districts. The university/city centre can be reached by bus or tram in 15 to 30 minutes.
  • You will have your own room but will have to share the kitchen, the bathroom and in some cases a lounge area with other female and male residents with various ethnic backgrounds within the same unit.
  • The buildings and rooms may differ in age, size and floorplan.
  • Due to organisational reasons, the room will be assigned to you. It is not possible to change the room.
  • Single rooms measure between 12 and 15 m² in size. They are furnished with a bed, cupboard, table and chair.
  • Pillow, blanket and bed linen are not provided. You can either bring your own set / a sleeping bag with you or book a starter set „Bed linen, pillow, blanket“ for 50€ during the online registration.
  • There is no guarantee that cooking utensils will be available in the kitchen.
  • There is no cleaning service. You will be responsible for the cleanness of your room.
  • The rooms are only available from arrival day until departure day. You will have to leave your room clean on the departure day at 10:00 a.m. at the latest.
  • Only you are allowed to stay in your room.
  • The exact address of your room will be given to you on the day of arrival.

Registration
Registration and Payment
  • All participants who have reached the age of 17 by the start of the course are welcome to join the Summer and Winter University.
  • Meeting other international students is something that makes the Summer and Winter University a multicultural experience for our participants. This is why it is in your best interest that the ratio of places per course and the number of students with the same country of origin is limited.
  • Please fill in the online application on this website. We will then inform you by email whether you can participate in the course or not and how to register online. There is no entitlement to participation.
  • Are you a member of a student group or would you like to organise the participation of your student group in the courses? In this case, please do not fill in the online registration request, but contact us by email.
  • In order to register, you will receive a personalised link via email. Please register within the stated time frame.
  • After having registered you will receive a preliminary registration confirmation by email. As soon as your payment has been completed, we will send you the final course registration confirmation, an official invitation for your visa request as well as important information concerning the placement test, your arrival and your stay in Freiburg by post and by email.

Online Placement Test

To ensure that you will be learning in a class group corresponding to your language level, an online placement test will be taken before courses begin. You will receive detailed information and advice by email after your registration has been completed.

You will be asked to indicate your approximate CEFR language level in the registration form. For information about the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), please click here.

 

Visa and Insurance
Visa

If you need a visa for the Federal Republic of Germany, please be sure to contact the responsible German Consulate or Embassy in your home country in advance. As soon as your registration and payment has been completed, we will send you an official invitation for your visa request by post as well as by email.

Insurance

As a Summer University student you are not insured against illness and accidents. We recommend that you contact your insurance company in advance to find out about your coverage. As you may be responsible for any damage you may cause e.g. in your dormitory room, we also recommend a public liability insurance.

 

Withdrawal

Registration is binding.

If you withdraw from the programme up to 20 days before courses begin, 50% of the course fee and 50% of the accommodation fee can be refunded. Regrettably, if you withdraw less than 20 days before courses begin, no refund is possible. This also applies in case of visa refusal.

Please only apply if you are sure that you want to participate in the course.

How do I get to Freiburg?

From Frankfurt am Main airport (www.frankfurt-airport.de) you can travel to Freiburg by train or long distance bus. Tickets and schedules are available at www.bahn.de and www.goeuro.de. From Euro-Airport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (www.euroairport.com) you can easily reach Freiburg by bus. The schedule is available at www.freiburger-reisedienst.de

How can I get around in Freiburg?

Freiburg offers a dense public transportation network. As soon as you arrive in Freiburg you can buy a monthly ticket pass (Regiokarte) which enables you to use all buses and trams in Freiburg as well as local trains in the surrounding region for the whole month.

Freiburg is also easy to access and explore by bicycle or on foot.

Information on transport in Freiburg is available at www.freiburg.de under the heading "Mobilität und Verkehr".

Please consult www.bahn.de and www.goeuro.de to find out about train and bus connections and prices when travelling in Germany.

 

 

Where can I eat?

During the Summer and Winter University, you can eat at the university dining hall (Mensa) at student prices. You will be given a "Unicard" for this purpose upon your arrival. A complete meal costs around 3,- €.
In addition to meat and fish menus, the university dining hall offers vegetarian and organic dishes as well as a variety of salads.

The university town Freiburg is the sunniest city in Germany and lies at a tripoint - in close proximity to France and Switzerland.

Freiburg's theatres, museums, cinemas and music scene provide for a vibrant mix of culture. Furthermore, Freiburg's close proximity to the Black Forest, the Alsace region in France and Switzerland allow for diverse excursion opportunities.

The Language Teaching Centre (SLI) is part of the Faculty of Philology, which was founded in 1457 and includes 11 faculties. With over 25,000 students the University shapes the cultural, social and economic life of the city.

Internationality is an integral part of the University - in 2017 about 18% of the students were international students.
