Studying in Germany

Introductory course for International Master's Degree Programmes

This course adresses the special situation of English-medium instruction in a German academic environment and provides specific support (based on empirical research findings) for international students studying in English and/or in Germany for the first time. Course contents include an introduction to the German university system and its learning culture with demonstrations of typical teaching methods and practical exercises in relevant assessment methods such as oral presentations or scientific writing in English. Additionally, participants will train their communication skills for interaction with professors and lecturers via e-mail or in office hours as well as their comprehension skills by listening comprehension exercises involving a variety of different accents. The course is complemented by an overview of the German grading system with an English-German glossary of relevant administrative terminology, an introduction to research resources available at the University of Freiburg (library and electronic data bases) and general discussions of intercultural issues.

Teacher: Susanne Gundermann holds an M.A. degree in English Philology and is currently working on a PhD research project assessing the implementation of English as medium of instruction in an International Master's Degree Programme at the University of Freiburg.
