Types of language courses

Two types of courses are offered by the SLI:
  • Type 1 includes the "G" courses (fee-paying courses).
  • Type 2 includes the "P" courses (mandatory courses for the students of many M.A. courses of study).
The following diagram provides details of the new language course classification.

Course type Detailed description
Type 1
G-Courses
  • These courses are for a maximum of 20 participants, and are specially offered for students from all faculties.
    Students must pay for these courses and register for them. They are distinguished by a "G" in the lecture timetable in the course overview and SLI on-line registration form (e.g. 20011 G).
  • These courses cannot be credited as BOK courses in the B.A. course of study
Type 2
P-Courses
  • These are beginner, intermediate and advanced courses in French, Spanish and Italian that are limited to 30 participants per course and are generally specially designed for and exclusively directed at students who have to provide proof in their subjects of knowledge of a foreign languages. The relevant examination regulations can be found only for the Masters and Lehramt (aimed at the teaching profession) courses of study in the following faculties: Philologie, Philosophie and Wirtschafts- und Verhaltenswissenschaft (Economics, Education, Psychology and Sport) see http://www.uni-freiburg.de/ga.
  • Exceptionally, in Wintersemester 2004/2005 B.A. students will also be allowed to join courses in terms of the BOK area.
  • These courses are free of charge but students must register. They are marked by a "P" in the lecture timetable in the course overview and SLI on-line registration form (e.g. 20012 P)
  • N.B.: The students concerned must provide their teacher with proof that the examinations regulations of their subject requires knowledge of a foreign language at the start of the course.
Type 3
  • Parallel to the above-mentioned courses are the Type 3 language courses. These are offered by the various institutes and departments and are open to students from all faculties. These courses are still free of charge and do not fall under the registration requirements of the SLI. In so far as they meet the requirements of the BOK language modules, they can be recognised by the BOK part of the B.A .course of study (see http://www.uni-freiburg.de/ga).
